Yakima has voluntarily issued a safety recall on their SpareTime Spare Tire Bicycle Rack (photo).

Yakima SpareTime Spare Tire Bicycle Rack

The recall issue
Yakima has determined that two mounting bolts on certain SpareTime racks do not meet material strength specifications. These bolts could break resulting in the bike(s) falling off the rack, which could create a road hazard to other vehicles or possibly result in a crash or injury to persons outside the vehicle.

How to identify the recalled racks
The photos below show what to look for, which includes a date code (on the mounting plate) between October 1, 2011 through October 30, 2012, and bolts that have no markings on them. Please check all SpareTime products you have.

The remedy
If you have one of these racks, please stop using it immediately. Yakima asks consumers to contact Yakima Customer Service directly. Yakima will provide new bolts at no expense. If you cannot do this on your own, bring the rack to us, and we will inspect and replace the bolts at no cost to you.
